Three Inspiring Days of Academic Exchange

by Marie-Catherine Hochreiter-Wagner

In June, we – Mustafa Al-Ghraibawi, Param Bhalerao, and Marie-Catherine Hochreiter-Wagner from Ars Iuris– had the pleasure of participating in the European Doctoral Program in Law in Paris. Jointly organized by Università Roma Tre, Université Paris Dauphine-PSL, and the University of Vienna, the program was made possible through the cooperation of Prof. Claudie Boiteau, Prof. Anne Karm, Prof. Franz-Stefan Meissel and Prof. Paolo Alvazzi del Frate.

The program began with a visit to the Conseil d’État, where we gained valuable insights into the work of France’s highest administrative court. Following a tour of the historic building, we had the opportunity to discuss the institution’s role and responsibilities. This exchange provided a fascinating perspective on the French legal system.

The main workshop at Université Paris Dauphine–PSL brought together doctoral researchers from Rome, Paris, and Vienna for a full day of presentations and discussions. In total, 16 papers were presented, covering two central themes: Property Law and the Renewal of Legal Sources in the Digital Age and in Times of Artificial Intelligence. We were delighted to contribute to these discussions ourselves.

Marie-Catherine Hochreiter-Wagner presented her research on soft law in EU digital regulation, Mustafa Al-Ghraibawi spoke about in-kind contributions in capital companies, and Param Bhalerao addressed direct and derivative rights to protect property under international investment law. The workshop provided a great opportunity for us to present our research, exchange ideas with fellow doctoral researchers, and engage in discussions across different legal traditions.

Beyond the academic program, the Doctoral Program also offered many opportunities for informal exchange and networking. A particular highlight was a wonderful guided tour of the Louvre by one of the PhD students from Paris Dauphine. We returned to Vienna with many new ideas and valuable feedback on our research projects as well as strengthened connections with fellow doctoral researchers from across Europe.
